Jon had the world at his feet. A promising career as a Computer Programmer, at a
well-known company, with career advancement opportunities at his fingertips.
He was well liked and respected by management and his colleagues. He has a stylish two bedroom unit he owns but is still paying it off. He lives alone, but had a great social life, centered around sports with his friends. Tennis was his key sport and he was also moving up the ranks in Jujitsu.
His life took a turn for the worst, when driving in a rush one day, to get to the bank before it closed. Needless to say, he no longer has function of his legs, but the good news is that his brain capacity is as good as it has always been. Besides Jon’s physical disability, he is also suffering psychologically, as the lifestyle he was used to with playing sports with his friends has changed and he feels more isolated now.
The work place that he has always loved are treating him differently, at the moment he feels he is just hanging on to his job, like they are doing him a favour and career advancement seems to be a dream of the past. He also gets pain and needs regular physiotherapy and he feels he really needs to talk to someone, to help him get through this. He knows that he needs to learn, how to do things differently and start a new way of life. Jon is considering joining a basketball team with other people who are also living with a disability. He also needs to know his rights, so he is not pushed aside and is treated equally.
This scenario is very real for many people and knowing who to turn to is often a challenge in itself.
